For information: Google are in the process of screwing up access to gmail. Unless you can "log in with Google" they'll shortly be stopping access from mailreaders.

Re 1: how and why? It would seem to sort out all the problems with a winbox sitting on a private network. The alternative is backup->USB disk followed by scp to the host.

I realise that the Cobian machines will all be Windows! The reason I asked about the server was because you asked about controlling them centrally. I'm working on trying to backup the laptops as part of my main system backups on the Linux machines, hence the query. I'm heading towards running Cobian...

I didn't log off as Admin, just used "switch user" to overlay a new session. However I know that Windows isn't good at multiple users, I'll retreat back to Linux!

If it's a VM, then it is possible that the host machine has cached a substantial part of it in memory, so the "seeks" are to memory, not to disk.
