I may be wrong but I think the exclusions superceed the inclusions. I think you need to separate this task into two, with the first one ignoring the big directory and the second one with only the little one as a source.

Yes, the engine has crashed. My guess is that there is some task that contains some complex event (post or pre backup) that is not in the same format that it's used in the new version. Would be interesting to take a look at your old list.
