Volume Shadow Copy

Post by javr »

Hello, I installed "Cobian Backup 11 Gravity" on Windows 10.
First time backup; the log says:

2021-12-29 09:08 Starting the Volume Shadow Copy snapshot for the drives: C:\
ERR 2021-12-29 09:09 Couldn't contact the Volume Shadow Copy requester. Please check that the service is installed and running
2021-12-29 09:09 Warning: The .NET 3.5 framework doesn't seem to be installed on your computer. This platform is needed to execute the Volume Shadow Copy requester
2021-12-29 09:09 Changing the backup type to full. Reason: task's first backup
2021-12-29 09:09 Creating the destination directory "\\AR....

... and so on.

So it says I have to install ".NET 3.5 framework", for whatever that is. I'm not comfortable installing software that I'm not familiar with. Is ".NET 3.5 framework" safe to install ?

Or , in other words, how does "Cobian Backup 11 Gravity" work without it ? Because it looks like it's making a backup anyway, it just seems like it's awfully slow - size is 37GB, and it managed to copy 1% in 21 hours. Thanks.

* You don't need VSC (even if it's very nice to use it) so if you don't want to install .NET 3.5 you don't need to. You can uncheck Use volume shadow copies on your task so you don't even see this warning.

* Yes, 1% in 21 hours IS slow. I guess your are copying a lot of small files to a NAS?

I got a notification
Post disapproved:
"Volume Shadow Copy"
Reason: The message contains links to illegal or pirated software..
I have no idea about any illegal link that I posted.

Anyway: I tested this software on another laptop with external HDD on USB-port in FULL: it said

Code: Select all

    2021-12-24 23:53 Creating the destination directory "D:\pre... ...\C 2021-12-24 23;53;14 (Full)"
    2021-12-24 23:53 The destination directory "D:\pre... ...\C 2021-12-24 23;53;14 (Full)" has been successfully created
   *
   *
   *
2021-12-25 11:21 Total backup time for "Lenovo": 11 hours, 28 minutes, 3 seconds
2021-12-25 11:21 ** Backup done for the task "Lenovo". Errors: 280. Processed files: 569563. Backed up files: 569283. Total size: 139,59 GB **
Ok, no problem , I left it over night.

Today I set it to INCREMENTAL, thinking it's gonna check what changed since the 25th December, but it looks like it's copying everything all over again:

Code: Select all

    2022-01-01 22:35 Creating the destination directory "D:\pre... ...\C 2022-01-01 22;35;00 (Incremental)"
    2022-01-01 22:35 The destination directory "D:\pre... ...\C 2022-01-01 22;35;00 (Incremental)" has been successfully created
because it's 00:35 now, 2 hours since it started, and it is on 34% now; so that's about 0,28% a minute.
FULL took 11 hours, 28 minutes, 3 seconds for 100%, so that's about 0,14% a minute.

What am I doing wrong ?

Advanced -> Clear archive attribute: checked.
It works just fine on 2 Win XP cpmputers, and one Win 10 computer, so I used the same old version for another two Win 10 computers, but I must be doing something wrong this time. The biggest difference is that other 3 computers are set for daily backups (Schedule -> Daily), and the last two I have problems with, are set to Schedule -> Manually.

Maybe I should:
uninstall Cobian Gravity,
delete what it created on the external disk,
install Cobian Gravity again;
set it up for "incremental" even for the first backup; it switches to "full" by itself if it sees that it's about a first backup;
set it up for Daily.

Or maybe try with Reflector.

I think the program is just failing to clöear the archive attribute (permissions). This should come out using the Verbose log.

I kinda figured out the source of slow speed: it's Wifi-network on 2.4GHz; they say it works well on 5GHz. There's no wish to upgrade to 5GHz; I guess it's gonna be less trouble to connect this computer to the external HDD using a USB-cable.
Why it wants to copy all over again (full) even with incremental checked on some other computer on cable network, might be because of checkbox "Create separated backup using timestamps". I unchecked that, and will test again on weekend.

If it does a full backup is because it needs to. Some info should be found in the log.

checking the option "create separate backups using timestamps" will always create a new backup, you can leave it checked if you make a backup of a .bak file (eg database).

it is not recommended to backup via wifi, it is extremely slow.

you can install it on the netframework, it's microsoft's own software and some software needs it for proper functioning.

I turned the verbose-log on, but my computer knowledge is not on the level to detect the problem. I'm not comfortable to post the log here because I'm not familiar with all it contains, so can I mail the log to you personally ? Basically, the problem is that it looks like Cobian Backup is starting a full backup every time it should start an incremental one, and I can't figure out why. It pisses me off because it works perfectly for several years already on 2 Win XP computers "install & forget", but I can't make it work on one Win 10 laptop.
By the way: it looks like an e-mail notification for a new message on this forum doesn't work.
