How to Keep Directories Out of FTP Backups

I need to skip over certain directories when I set up an FTP backup job. I have tried to make a filter but have not been able to. Could someone show me how to use a filter to properly leave out directories? It would be helpful if you could give exact syntax or examples.

The filters can be used with local sources. With remote sources, the filters are ignored if I recall it correctly.
