No disk usage during local, encrypted, compressed backup.

Post by InfieldTriple »

Hi there,

I initiated a full backup (including all three of my drives) which would compress and encrypt all the data. I've run it overnight, and while I suspect that my combined total of 1.65 TB would not be finished, I expected that there would be any signs of progress of any signs that the back-up is working.

I am using Windows 10.

When I looked at my PC this morning, all four disks (three to be backed up and one external as the destination are all completely inactive), as per task manager. My CPU is also at idle levels of usage.

Below is the log, you can see at the end that I've initiated a pause in an attempt to bring it to life. The pause hasn't started.

Code: Select all

2024-08-18 03:02 The log tab has been cleared. The log file with its full content is still available from the Log menu

Anyway, just wondering if this is expected behavior for a large encrypted and compressed backup.

Edit: Update, I paused it at 10:50, it is n ow 5:40, and it is still trying to pause... Is it safe to cancel?

The operation is paused. This can only happen if the "Pause" button has been pressed (perhaps by mistake)?

Hi, sorry, let me clarify. I had this running overnight and it was not paused. You can see the time difference in the log between the pause and the last message. I paused in the morning after realizing nothing was happening. I then later tried restarting the task, and it "resumed" but instead resumed the 'nothing' behaviour.

I've since modified my task to not include compression and it is running fine so clearly this was the issue.

OK; so it seems to be compression that is failing. Try by changing to the 7z method if possible.
