Error occurred, access is denied while backing up

Post by HungFe »

I have been using Cobian for years with no issues, it's been great.
Recently I upgraded the whole system, currently running windows 10 and installed Cobian reflector and since then I have no luck backing up my drives.
It's installed as an application. I use it to back up my non-system drives. Momentarily I'm trying a full backup.
I keep getting the message bellow.
An error occurred while listing the content of the directory "H:\$RECYCLE.BIN\S-1-5-21-497321433-3565498543-2833531141-1000": (5) Access is denied: [H:\$RECYCLE.BIN\S-1-5-21-497321433-3565498543-2833531141-1000]

I'm not even sure why it's trying to access recycle bin, but I emptied it so that there is no confusion.
Then I added the filter to exclude the recycle bin.
The first time the path was C:\$Recycle.Bin, then just in case I switched to H:\$Recycle.Bin.
However, I keep getting the error.
The last time I did it the files were all copied but it's unsettling to get this error.
In the older version this was never an issue.
The task that I'm doing could not be simpler.
Any suggestions?

Hi Luis,
This is my first post on this forum - apologies if I've posted in the wrong place. Firstly, thank you for such a brilliant piece of software! I've been using Cobian for years. I have been looking for a solution to this issue since I started using Cobian. No matter what I try, I cannot correctly exclude System Volume Information and Recycle Bin from my backup. I always get errors, no matter what filters I try.
Example:
ERR 2024-04-04 09:52:42 An error occurred while listing the content of the directory "D:\$RECYCLE.BIN\S-1-5-21-1577928414-1351898710-903497448-1000": (5) Access is denied: [\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy19\$RECYCLE.BIN\S-1-5-21-1577928414-1351898710-903497448-1000]

ERR 2024-04-04 10:00:48 An error occurred while listing the content of the directory "D:\System Volume Information": (5) Access is denied: [\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy19\System Volume Information]

I've tried filters in multiple configurations:

1) *\$RECYCLE.BIN\*
2) *\$RECYCLE.BIN\* \*
3) D:\$RECYCLE.BIN\*
4) E:\$RECYCLE.BIN\*

etc..

I've searched the forums and yet found no solution that works. In this forum post:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1522&p=6392&hilit=f ... +bin#p6392
Another user asks the same question, and your answer is to add the following filter:
Just add

*\$RECYCLE.BIN\* (or E:\$RECYCLE.BIN\) as an exclusion filter.

Ot
However, as stated above, I have tried this and many other filters, but none seem to correctly exclude System Volume Information or Recycle Bin.
I'm currently using Cobian Reflector 2.6.55.
Any assistance with this would be appreciated, as this is the only issue I have with this software.
Many Thanks.

Hi Luis,
Thanks for replying, however, the link you posted states that the System Volume Information and Recycle Bin folders should be excluded from the copy task... which is exactly what my original question was regarding. After trying to exclude these folders, I (and many other users from what I can tell) still continue to receive the errors in the log when Cobian ignores the rules and tries to access these folders anyway.

That is the point of my question, that Cobian seems to 'ignore' any filters I (and others) have tried.

This might be a bug or require further investigation?

As *\$RECYCLE.BIN\*, yes, those folders will be accessed, but as E:\$RECYCLE.BIN\ they won't.
