Application not running at startup

Post by GiacomoGo »

I could not find other reports like "application not running" and "application does not start", so I must have an unusual issue.

I've used Cobian 1x for years, and recently switched to Reflector, on two Win11 laptops. It's an incredible app, has saved us from several hard-drive and motherboard failures (and I've donated from that gratitude ; ) So I'm sure that the software remain exceptionally good, and I'm making a silly mistake.
  • 1st laptop, all is well: the application runs upon user login (all users)
  • 2nd laptop, same installation as far as I can tell, but the application does not run at startup (all users)
This prevents my task list from loading, and also from checking application options. I can find no way to force the application to start. This includes trying to force the main application to run, which is installed here on both pcs:
  • "C:\Program Files\Cobian Reflector\Cobian.Reflector.Application.exe"
However, if I re-install the app from the cobiansoft download, on that 2nd pc, and make no other change, then is starts OK that one time immediately after installation. When I re-boot my pc, I need to re-install to get that main app to run. It makes no sense to me.

Anyone recognize any mistake I made with that 2nd pc? Anything that I can check and confirm in Win11 Services, Task Scheduler, registry Run folder, ... ?
  • The only difference for the 2nd pc is that Application running reports "No" instead of "Yes"
  • (I think it's a minor bug that repeatedly selecting the Service and application control tool opens multiple windows, instead of just that one control panel)

The main service is NOT installed on either pc:

Thanks for any suggestions to get this 2nd pc configed correctly for reliable backups.

There are some "optimizers" that prevents some program to start automatically. This or the program is perhaps starting but crashing (?). Check the Event Viewer.

I used to spend a lot of time making sense of Event Viewer errors and warnings ... eventually accepting that I could rarely make any sense of them or follow them through to any resolution. Nonetheless, I do spot a recurring error 8194 related to VSS. I can't do much with this, but perhaps others can "read the matrix". "Access denied" is the only part I understand, and doesn't make sense since once started, my backups run fine (Reflector.VSCRequester runs fine as "System", and .Application and .UI run fine as me. I don't see what should run as Network Service, WRTWRTIC or otherwise :

Now I can add that if I create a simple start-up task, all is well. I did not have to do this on my other Win11 pc. This works fine on the 2nd one. Doesn't make sense, but works, so fine with me : )

Well that explains the VSC error. I have no folder c:\Program Files\Backup*
: )

Code: Select all

c:\Program Files>dir /x /a:h /a:d b*
Volume in drive C has no label.

 Directory of c:\Program Files

2023-04-25 16:08 <DIR> Bonjour
