Searching bulletin board

For whatever reason I am unable to search the bulletin board even when following the rules (i.e words not too common). The only way to find anything is to list all the messages and then scan the subjects.

What am I doing wrong?

The forum has its quirks.
I am thinking about replacing it with Discourse.
